REPAIR GUARD PROTECTS A RESIDENTIAL white hollow brick WALL IN BROOKLYN, NYC
- LOCATION: BROOKLYN, NYC
- DATE APPLIED:
- SUBSTRATE: WHITE HOLLOW BRICK
- PRODUCT USED: REPAIR GUARD
- APPLICATION METHOD: PUMP SPRAYER
- SITE DESCRIPTION: RESIDENTIAL EXTERIOR SURFACES
THE CHALLENGE
White hollow brick is a popular building material known for its aesthetic appeal and affordability. However, its porous nature makes it susceptible to a range of environmental factors, leading to structural deterioration and aesthetic degradation. White hollow bricks readily absorb moisture, which can lead to cracking, spalling and efflorescence. In winter climates, absorbed water can freeze and expand, causing significant damage. Rain and wind can also gradually erode the surface of white hollow bricks, leading to the loss of material and compromised structural integrity.
THE SOLUTION
Repair Guard is a nanotechnology-based consolidant specifically designed to address the challenges faced by white hollow brick walls. It penetrates deep into the brick structure, creating a robust and invisible network that strengthens and protects the material from the inside out.
The nanoparticles create a hydrophobic barrier on the surface of the brick, preventing water ingress and protecting the material from moisture damage. The nanoparticles also improve the overall strength and integrity of the structure. By reducing water absorption, Repair Guard helps protect the brick from damage caused by freeze-thaw cycles.
Repair Guard also keeps the brick’s natural pores open, allowing any trapped moisture to escape.
IMPLEMENTATION
- Surface Preparation: The stone wall underwent thorough cleaning through light pressure washing to remove contaminants and prepare the surface for Repair Guard application.
- Application: Repair Guard was evenly applied to the wall using a pump sprayer. Due to the extent of the damage, two treatments were necessary to ensure comprehensive coverage and penetration to the point of rejection.
6 MONTHS POST-APPLICATION RESULTS & evaluation
Post-application, Repair Guard successfully stabilized the wall, preventing further decay and structural damage. The treated surface maintained its natural appearance, water vapor permeability, and porosity, preserving the “breathability” of the substrate.
6 months after Repair Guard was applied, no signs of deterioration or changes in the treated area were observed. The hollow bricks not only showed water-repellency, but the mortar joints were equally protected by Repair Guard.
Repair Guard is a comprehensive solution for protecting and preserving white hollow brick. Its ability to improve moisture resistance also enhances freeze-thaw resistance. After treatment, the natural appearance of the brick remains preserved, and the porosity and “breathability” of the substrate also remains unchanged.
